If you play basketball, it is important that you work on routines for increasing vertical leap - this should be a goal, especially if you're not playing. There are many components that go into this type of training, especially if it is to be effective. You can get your work out by simply going to the court and playing the game everyday. There is actually much more to think about than you would imagine. If you want to improve your vertical leaping ability, this article is written to show you how to take your training time to the next level.

First of all, your quadriceps (which are located in front of your thighs) are the first muscles we want to discuss. Sometimes a gym membership or buying some free weights is not in your budget. There is an alternative that can help.

Sit in an imaginary chair for as long as possible. If you have never tried that, then you will be surprised at how hard it is. You should keep your knees right above your feet and not deviate if at all possible. Maintaining your balance, if you feel like you're going to fall, can be done by holding your arms out. You want to eventually keep your thighs parallel with the floor which is not an easy trick. When you try this the first time, don't be shocked if you can't do it for 30 seconds. It takes some time.

One way that you can stretch out your knees and quads is with a quad stretch. You can do this standing free and clear, or holding onto something in case you lose balance. More than likely, you have done this at school at some point or another. What you do is pull one leg up and reach back with the same side hand and grab your foot. So they keep pulling back toward your back as if you were trying to touch it with your foot or leg. And as you are stretching, make sure that you minimize your potential for injury by keeping the knee (that you are standing on) close to your leg. Your knee, and quad, can be stretched by doing this. You will feel it! Make sure that you pull back if you feel any discomfort at all. Go slow and gently.

Do you know what box jumping is? It is a way that you can improve your fast twitch muscle response and rebounding ability. Get some type of box to jump off of. Make sure it is sturdy. You simply jump up and down off of this box to exercise.

Naturally, the higher the box the more difficult it will be. Make sure it is not too difficult to jump on this box, and off of it, when you first start. To complete this exercise, you simply jump off of the box, land, and then jump back on it. It's as simple as that. You need to stretch before you do this. A quick warm-up is also recommended.

There are always going to be players who don't seem to have any need to do any extra work to increase the height or strength of their vertical leaps. It's true that some have this ability naturally but they are really rare--remember that. If you don't have this natural ability try to accept that and, instead, work hard at using the various techniques you've learned for improvement. You can get past this by working hard to improve yourself so that you will be better than you are now.
